Dot - The worlds smallest stop-motion character

The guys at Aardman made this little film to help promote the new Nokia N8. Pretty great stuff but I bet somebody can go smaller.

Fantastic Review of Wall*E

I know this is years late but I still wanted to share this great review of Wall*E by Dave Hamstra.

"Do thinking machines enhance our humanity or rob us of it? While those of us who benefit from our computerized society may choose to ignore this existential question, the very existence of Pixar, the animation studio whose movies contain nothing but images wrought with thinking machines, depends on the answer. And in their latest animated feature, WALL-E, Pixar has confronted this question and answered it with an unambiguous, 'Yes.'?"

Click Here for the full article.

(For the sake of full disclosure I have to say that Dave is my brother-in-law. But that doesn't mean I was forced to post his review. It truly is a fascinating read.)

Stan VanDerBeek's 1963 film Breathdeath has been cited by Terry Gilliam as the film that inspired his approach to animation.

Life at Rainmaker

So, a lot of people have been asking me lately, "What's it like working at Rainmaker?" Usually I just say it's "Pretty cool". Here's a little film that sums it up better than my words ever could.

The Substance of Style

Wow, it's been a long time since I've posted. Well, I just ran across a great series of essays on the style of Wes Anderson. It's an enlightening look at the art of film-making and gives a good idea of the necessary thought and inspiration that goes into every great film. It also highlights the importance of knowing what you want as a film-maker.

So, here they are in five parts:

Adventure Time!

Here's a little preview of the upcoming Cartoon Network show, Adventure Time, by the man himself, Pendleton Ward. I'm sure by now you've all seen the original Adventure Time that was made for Nickolodeon. Other projects by Pen Ward include The Bravest Warriors.

You can check the show's progression, including artwork, here via Channel Frederator.

Demo Reels

A lot of my friends are making demo reels.  Graduation is coming up and I can only guess that some of them would like to have a job soon.

So, on that note I'm posting this link to a video by
Carlos Baena on what Pixar looks for in an animation reel.  The video was made by Animation Mentor.

Watch the Titles

Here's a great site I found through the Cartoon Brew Blog.  It has a collection of fantastic title sequences.

This is the end title sequence from Madagascar 2 made by Jamie Caliri.  You can check out some behind the scenes stuff over at Megan Brain's blog.

Just as an update I found another fantastic site dedicated to title sequences.  Check out The Art of the Title Sequence.  There's some really beautiful stuff there!
